Introduction

  • Objective: Create an onboarding training that provides new volunteers with a clear understanding of WfWI’s mission, values, and volunteer responsibilities through an interactive and engaging experience.
  • Engagement: I wanted the training to go beyond basic eLearning, so I incorporated scenario-based learning and interactive elements to keep volunteers engaged and help them apply their knowledge in real-world situations.
  • User Experience: Develop a smooth, user-friendly interface that allows volunteers to easily navigate the course, track their progress, and feel confident as they complete the training.

Project Goals

I developed an interactive onboarding course for Women for Women International (WfWI) volunteers to introduce them to the organization’s mission and values. The course creates an engaging and supportive learning experience, integrating visuals and interactive scenarios that prepare volunteers for their roles and empower them to contribute meaningfully to the organization’s work.

Overview

Design Process

Research:
Before starting, I took the time to understand the mission and values of WfWI, as well as the needs and expectations of new volunteers who might have varying levels of familiarity with the organization’s work and processes.

Concept Development:
The concept was to create a training that was both informative and inspiring, reflecting the organization’s empowering mission. I used Chameleon Creator to integrate interactive elements like real-world scenarios and knowledge checks to ensure volunteers could engage with the material in a meaningful way.

Wireframes/Prototypes:
I began by developing a mood board that captured the organization’s mission-driven aesthetic, using soft colors and clean typography to evoke a sense of warmth and support. I then created wireframes to outline the user flow, followed by building a prototype to test the layout and functionality before finalizing the design.
The Women for Women International onboarding training UI adopts a flat illustration style with a minimalist, modern, and monochromatic color palette. The design features solid colors and simple shapes, with a focus on a monochromatic teal color scheme that creates a cohesive and calming experience. Minimalist details, such as simplified facial features and clothing, along with subtle decorative elements like flowers, leaves, and geometric shapes, add depth without overwhelming the content. Rounded edges and clean design evoke approachability and warmth, aligning with the themes of community, empowerment, and support. This style is commonly used in social impact and nonprofit storytelling, reinforcing the mission-driven nature of the training.

User Interface

All were generated using ChatGPT. I began by defining the visual style: flat, minimalist, modern, and monochromatic teal, to ensure consistency across the training. As the content evolved, I provided ChatGPT with specific prompts to create images that complemented each moment, symbolic visuals representing concepts such as empowerment and support. Each illustration was carefully crafted to maintain a cohesive look and feel, aligning with the overall tone of the training while enhancing learner engagement without causing distraction.

Illustrations

  • Scenario-Based Learning: Volunteers engage in realistic scenarios where they navigate different volunteer situations, practicing decision-making and learning effective communication techniques.
  • Matching Games: Interactive matching games help reinforce key concepts and ensure volunteers can apply what they’ve learned in a fun, engaging way.
  • Self-Reflection Activities: Volunteers participate in activities that encourage self-reflection, reinforcing the mission and values of Women for Women International.

Key Features

The final training product is an interactive course that immerses new volunteers in the mission and values of Women for Women International. Through scenario-based learning, matching games, and self-reflection activities, volunteers are equipped with the knowledge and skills to contribute meaningfully. The course is designed to be visually engaging and user-friendly, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable learning experience from start to finish.

Final Product

Relevance to Real-Life Scenarios: I learned that volunteers connect better with the content when it directly relates to their everyday experiences. By incorporating practical scenarios, the training felt more relevant and impactful.

Simplicity in Design: Keeping the design simple and intuitive was key to ensuring the course was accessible to all volunteers. I realized that a clean, easy-to-navigate interface helps learners focus more on the material than on how to use the platform.

Engagement through Interaction: I found that volunteers were more engaged when the content was interactive. It made the training more dynamic and allowed them to apply their knowledge in real-time, improving retention.

Volunteering: I learned that as a volunteer, the role is to support, not fix or counsel. Clear boundaries are essential for building trust and ensuring safe, respectful relationships, allowing everyone to feel emotionally safe and empowered.

Lessons Learned

This project reinforced my belief in the power of interactive, scenario-based learning to inspire and educate volunteers. It also highlighted the importance of making training accessible and relevant to the audience’s real-world experience.

In the future, I’d like to incorporate more gamification elements, such as achievement badges and progress-based rewards, to increase motivation and track volunteer engagement over time.
